Be Still and know that I am God! Psalm 46:10
(Evelyn Cannon, October 18, 2009)
During this time of transition, I draw strength from these words from the Psalms. This verse, hand painted by member Laurie Wiesenberg, is displayed beautifully over the window in the chapel.
I am Evelyn Cannon, and Bill and I have been members at Christ the King for 25 years. Our oldest son, William, is a sophomore at the University of Michigan. He has blessed this congregation with his many musical talents throughout his life here. Our second son, Walker, passed away in August 1998 from complications from a liver transplant. The Walker Cannon Memorial Chapel is named in his memory.
I have a great love and strong commitment to CTK, and I am honored to serve on the Celebrate CTK task force. Other members include: Dottie D’Angelo Smith, Jerry Cox, Tricia Bill, Ken Santiago, Paul Kaeser, Sean Daley, Nori Riley, Matt Zurn, Austin Hecht, Pastor Sherry, and Pastor Salness. In choosing the members, great care was taken by the council to try and represent all areas of the congregation.
We started meeting in late May with Pastor Sims. He provided us with very good advice and helped us congeal as a group. We met with Pastor Salness when he first visited CTK in July and from there we all anxiously awaited his arrival in September. Since he has joined us, we have hit the ground running. We meet every other week with individual or group assignments between meetings. We start off in prayer and then spend a small amount of time going over the book A Field Guide For The Missional Congregation followed by working through the tasks at hand. From the book, a “Missional Congregation” is described as a congregation with an active presence of God and is seeking to participate in God’s mission for the world. We as a congregation are not here for ourselves; we are here for God’s purpose.
Our next goals are to publish a timeline to the congregation and start visiting with small groups to help us formulate a mission and vision for CTK. We then will put together a Congregational profile to hand over to the senior pastor call committee. There is much work to be done and please bear in mind that this process will happen in God’s time—not ours.
We invite you to pray for the spiritual guidance for our group. We would appreciate your prayers daily. All of us on the task force, drawing from Acts 4:24 “When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God,” are collectively taking a prayer break at 4:24 on Thursday afternoons to pray for direction and guidance.
We know people are getting anxious to find a senior pastor and get settled; we on the task force experience that same anxiousness at times. However, this is a divine process that will occur in God’s perfect timing. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please seek us out; we are here to listen!! Thank you and God’s peace!
